Staying fit, the first prerequisite to snowboarding.
Consult a fitness expert regarding exercises specific to snowboarding. Learning to exercise all parts of your body will benefit you with increased strength and energy. This will help reduce your chances of injury and improve your snowboarding skills.
Consider the Expenses ...Snowboarding expenses add up. Before committing to all of the gear, consider renting it two or three times, or maybe even a season. Still pumped up? Great. Go for it.At the "Top" of your List - A HelmetThe benefit of a helmet comes only when the unexpected occurs. A collision with a tree, a crash with another boarded, a surprise encounter with a rock outcropping. These are the events you prepare for when you purchase your helmet. Be sure the fit is snug to your head, without wearing a beanie. A loose fitting helmet will not protect you. Most helmets are designed for a single crash. Many manufacturers have a "crash cash" program. You receive cash for your crashed helmet. This is applied to the purchase of your new helmet. While at our local community hospital in Mt. Shasta, we were having our own minor family emergency. We met this young man in his 20's. His helmet comment gave us a chuckle. "A helmet would have been one hell of a lot cheaper than this emergency room visit." The moral of the story. If your safety isn't of great concern to you, but the money is, then wear a helmet. Wrist guards, knee guards, and butt padding, this additional safety gear will help cushion your falls. All this falling will in turn help improve your snowboarding skills. Practice makes perfect.
Snowboarding Info. For BeginnersWhen purchasing your board select quality, properly fitted equipment. A reputable board shop will assist you in your choices. While starting out, a beginner will be using a Freestyle/All Mountain Board. These are softer, and more flexible boards. They also have soft boots and step-in or strap-in bindings. How Tall Is My Board?Beginning riders and Freestylers prefer shorter boards that allow them to maneuver easier. Height of boards in ascending order. Beginning Riders ......... Between the collar bone and the chin. Mountain Riders .......... Between the chin and the nose. Deep Powder Riders .... Between the nose and past the forehead. |
Is the Width Important? As far as the width of a board goes, this is determined by the length of your foot. There shouldn't be much room on either end of your foot. Too much room and you won't have the control needed, toes hanging over the board and you won't move. Now that you have purchased and used your equipment, periodically have it tuned up. A tune up will consist of corrective binding adjustments, edge adjustments, and waxing. Don't Let Your Board Walk Off ... The Mt. Shasta Ski Park has a Corral for your snowboard, we recommend you use it. If you are boarding at an area that doesn't have a corral, try a snowboard lock. Look for locks that are small but do the job. If you can slip them into your pocket, then you are more likely to use them.Off to the snowboarding shops, with your snowboarding info. in hand, you are now prepared.
