The Latest and Greatest Adrenaline Rush:

Extreme sledding simply means to sled in an area that is undeveloped and to push your limits. The main benefits of this type of sledding is to surround yourself with terrain that is always uncontrolled, varied and challenging. Although very exciting, a few words of caution.

We have just that type of country here in Mt. Shasta.

Bunny Flat or Snowman's Hill are the most popular. Another option however, is just find your own hill.

In the last couple of years sledding has been revived and upgraded to "extreme sledding".

Today, we enjoy sledding down the hills with the whole family for winter fun.

Extreme Sledding, Tools of the Trade:

Mt. Shasta Airboarding

The Airboard is the hottest sled on the snow. Durable, steerable, stoppable, easy to control and capable of achieving speeds in access of 70 mph. This sled weighs in at 6.0 lbs. and fits into a 12x16x3-inch knapsack.

Constructed like a whitewater raft with side hand grips and ribbed runners underneath, the ride is equivalent to body boarding in the ocean. Shifting your body weight allows for steering and stopping. Being an inflatable, taking bumps and jumps are less painful than other snow toys.

Airboarding doesn’t require a lot of equipment as does skiing and snowboarding. All you need, is good winter clothing appropriate for your current weather conditions, a helmet, and of course your Airboard.

Easy to learn, great family fun.

The Mad River products made in Vermont, are today's modern day sled. Sporting great directional control, flotation, and a binding system. This sled is made of a strong plastic material with grooves that help maneuverability.

A simple belt that attaches to both sides of the sled goes over the sledders calves or thighs. This acts as the binding system.

With the directional control, flotation, and a binding system the sledder performs the same stunts as skiers and snowboarders. Spins, flips, rails, and jumps are all part of this sleds capabilities. Control like this allows you to "drive" the sled not just ride it. With the large snow surface side, it allows the sled to stay afloat in deeper snow and powder conditions.

Mt. Shasta SleddingThe Hammerhead, another Vermont company, is a redesign of the traditional Flexible Flyer sled. Materials are aircraft grade aluminum, and suspension fabric seating. The sled weighs a mere 8.7 lbs. With skis on, it is the lightest of any performance sled.

The Hammerhead has precise steering, hence directional control. All together these features make it one of the fastest sleds available.

Extreme sledding has become one of the latest trends. These childhood sledding memories have been dusted off, and rebuilt with the latest technologies. The childhood thrill has turned into an extreme sport that will keep you and your kids heart's pumping.
